Michigan Wolverines hire Kyle Whittingham to five-year deal to become 22nd head coach in school history

Michigan Wolverines, Kyle Whittingham

The Michigan Wolverines hired former Utah Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham to a five-year deal to become the 22nd head coach in school history! Whittingham is widely regarded as one of the nation’s most underrated coaches, compiling a 177-88 record in 21 years at Utah, highlighted by a 13-0 campaign and Sugar Bowl win over Alabama in 2008.

The former Utah head coach was named the 2019 Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year, 2019 and 2021 Pac-12 Coach of the Year, and led the Utes to Pac-12 titles in 2021 and 2022. Now, Whittingham will bring much-needed consistency, stability and toughness to Michigan following former head coach Sherrone Moore's scandalous exit this month.

“He’s a great coach. He shares the values Michigan cares about," Big Ten Network analyst and Michigan alum Jake Butt explained. "This is an excellent hire." Only time will tell just how successful Whittingham will be at Michigan but it appears to be a quality hire as the Wolverines look to return to national prominence and compete for championships moving forward.
