The Indiana Hoosiers held off the Miami Hurricanes 27-21 in the 2025 College Football Playoff national championship game to win the first title in program history on Monday. Indiana became the first school in the playoff era to finish with a 16-0 record, capping the record-breaking season with a thrilling win.
Indiana jumped out to a 10-0 lead at halftime but Miami cut the deficit to 17-14, before Indiana star quarterback Fernando Mendoza scored a touchdown run to regain momentum in the fourth quarter, followed by defensive back Jamari Sharpe grabbing a game-clinching interception in the final minute.
"This victory is so sweet. There are no words. It's the most special moment of my life," Mendoza told the media following the triumph. In just two short years, Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti completely turned the program around – transforming the Hoosiers from an afterthought to winning their first national title.
It's the most unlikely turnaround ever as the Hoosiers were the losingest program in college football history when Cignetti was hired, and now they're on top of the sport. Mendoza finished his historic season by becoming the 10th quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy and national championship in the same year.
