CFB: Eagles upset unbeaten Broncos for first win of season
Game Recap:
The Eastern Michigan Eagles (1-4) earned their first victory of the season with an impressive 53-42 win over previously undefeated Western Michigan. The Broncos came into the game in first place of the MAC West before losing for the first time this year despite getting out to a 21-16 lead. From that point on, the Eagles were dominant on both sides of ball. Preston Hutchinson picked up two touchdowns (to Quian Williams and Tanner Knue) late in the second quarter to put EMU up 30-21 at halftime.
Kaleb Eleby got Western Michigan within two points early in the third quarter but Eastern Michigan went on a 20-7 run to seal the victory as Darius Boone and Samson Evans earned rushing touchdowns to go along with three field goals from Chad Ryland. The 53 points scored by EMU is the most in school history against the Broncos. This also marks the first time the Eagles have won at Western Michigan since 2012. Darius Boone had 148 yards and 5.9 yards per carry in the win.
"I love my team. People end up trying to define you by your record and I get that but the resolve of our football team to endure the last month is impressive. We know we're getting better," Chris Creighton told EMU Athletics. "It feels great. It's a really fun locker room. Far from perfect but we took the ball away three times and we didn't turn it over. Last week, we gave it away five times. We took care of the ball today and it's a great feeling."
