CFB: Toledo tops EMU in Ypsilanti
Game Recap:
The Eastern Michigan Eagles (0-3) lost their home opener to the Toledo Rockets (2-1) on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Rynearson Stadium in Ypsilanti, MI. Eli Peters gave the Rockets a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with a 25-yard pass TD to Devin Maddox. Toledo extended the lead in the second quarter, taking a 24-7 lead into halftime. Eastern Michigan's only score in the first half came on a 17-yard TD from Preston Hutchinson to Tanner Knue.
EMU attempted to keep it close it close in the second half, scoring three touchdowns in the final 16 minutes of the game. All three scores came from Hutchinson, connecting with DJ Smith, Quian Williams, and Bryson Cannon. It was too little, too late for the Eagles though as Toledo pulled away for a 45-28 victory. Hutchinson finished with 244 yards and four touchdowns on a 65.8% completion rate. Bryant Koback rushed for 149 yards on 24 carries for Toledo.
"This was a really, really poor performance tonight. Not to take anything away from Toledo, they played really well. I thought our defense gave us a chance early on, coming up with some stops and takeaways. We just couldn't do anything on offense," Eagles head coach Chris Creighton told EMU Athletics. "In the second half, we just didn't give our defense some air. Offensively, we just never got back on track. We haven't been beaten badIy in a long time but we did tonight."
