CFB: Eagles lose heartbreaker at home
Game Recap:
The Eastern Michigan Eagles (0-4) failed to close out rival Central Michigan (3-1) on Friday, Nov. 27 after leading 20-6 going to the fourth quarter. EMU led for the majority of the game, getting out to a 7-0 lead after Preston Hutchinson pump faked and ran in for a 3-yard score. After Central Michigan picked up a pair of field goals, Chad Ryland extended EMU's lead with a 34-yard FG of his own. Hutchinson then put the Eagles up 17-6 at halftime after another rushing TD.
It seemed like EMU was going to coast to their first win of the season as they led 20-6 to start the fourth quarter and 23-14 with 8:59 left. That's when the flip switched for CMU, though, as the Chippewas forced three turnovers and scored 17 points in the final five minutes of the game to win 31-23. Hutchinson totaled 422 yards and two touchdowns but also threw three interceptions in the loss. Kobe Lewis ran for 106 yards on 5.9 yards per carry for the Chips.
"We turned the ball over on the last three possessions. There was no way that we were not going to win that game. It's still kind of surreal. Taking the ball away and taking care of the ball is a pretty big deal," Chris Creighton told EMU Athletics. "Overall we're a pretty young team that's just going to keep getting better and better. That's got to be our focus. This group of guys is going to be victorious. Everybody is hurting for each other."
