Kentucky has gotten off to a surprising 1-4 start and it seems they might be destined for the NIT like John Calipari's 2012-13 team unless they're able to turn things around in SEC play. The Wildcats took down Morehead State 81-45 in the season opener but have lost four straight since, to Richmond, #7 Kansas, Georgia Tech, and Notre Dame. With two games until conference play, we wanted to explore what's wrong with Kentucky and see how they can still turn it around.
The reason Calipari's team has struggled to start the year is a combination of inexperience, an overwhelming amount of turnovers, poor 3-point shooting, a lack of a traditional offseason, and more. The Wildcats are always younger than their opponents but this team is especially young. Kentucky has just 3 juniors/seniors. Meanwhile, programs like Richmond (10), Georgia Tech (9), Notre Dame (8), and even Kansas (6) are full of upperclassmen.
In such an unconventional year, leadership is even more important than usual and Kentucky doesn't have it. With that said, the Wildcats have to start taking care of the ball and hitting their 3-pointers. In Kentucky's losses, they shot 21.6% from the perimeter and averaged 17.3 turnovers. If they can go at least 3-2 in their next five games Including UCLA, #23 Louisville, and South Carolina, then maybe Kentucky will have a shot at being on the right side of the bubble this time around.
With talent like BJ Boston, Terrence Clarke, and Olivier Sarr, a turnaround is possible but unlikely.
