The Michigan Wolverines hired Mike Boynton Jr. as head coach following the departure of Dusty May. After being named the interim head coach in the immediate aftermath of May's exit in late June, Boynton Jr. officially signed a 2-year deal to be the program's newest head coach on Friday.

"We have built a championship culture and standard that everyone associated with this program takes great pride in. We have an outstanding group of players and I'm excited to get to work and continue the success we've established together," Boynton Jr. told the media after being named head coach.

Boynton Jr. will enter his third season at Michigan after contributing to one of the greatest two-year stretches in school history — posting a 64-13 record, capturing the program's first NCAA Tournament national championship in nearly four decades, and the 2026 Big Ten regular season title.

"You can't ask for a better person to lead Michigan. He's an outstanding coach, an even better person, and our players believe in him because they see the work he puts in," May said. "There's nobody more deserving of this opportunity and I know he'll do an outstanding job leading this program."

Despite the coaching change, Michigan should be back in contention as Boynton Jr. looks to find success in his first season at the helm — led by backcourt duo Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney, transfer frontcourt tandem J.P. Estrella and Moustapha Thiam, and 5-star freshman forward Brandon McCoy Jr.
