United States secures second FIFA World Cup Knockout Stage win ever with 2-0 triumph over Bosnia & Herzegovina
The United States defeated Bosnia & Herzegovina 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 in San Francisco on Wednesday to earn a spot in the Round of 16 and secure just the second Knockout Stage win ever!
Just moments after a goal was overturned for offsides, Folarin Balogun got the scoring started by handling a deflected pass and sinking a go-ahead goal to put the United States in front 1-0 late in the opening half.
Despite being down a player for the final 36 minutes after Balogun was called for a controversial red card, the United States extended the advantage with a free kick goal from Malik Tillman in the 82nd minute.
"It didn't go exactly as planned with a red card but it shows how good of a team we are," Christian Pulisic told the media following the historic win, but it comes with a bittersweet taste as Balogun was ejected.
The United States moved to 3-0-1 in the tournament and will take on Belgium with a quarterfinals berth at stake on Monday. However, the United States faces an uphill battle with Balogun forced to the sideline.
