OLY: Germany Takes Out Canada
Germany has defeated Canada, 4-3, in their semifinal matchup. Canada came into the game as favorites to reach the gold medal game, but allowed Germany to get out to a quick start and they failed to look back. Patrick Hager, a forward for the German national team, has three goals and three assists in the tournament, and is hoping to lead Germany to a medal for the first time in men's hockey since 1976. Germany has never won the gold medal, which they'll have a chance to get when they face the Olympic Athletes from Russia. Canada fought back after trailing the game 3-0, but it wasn't enough to advance.
The last time Canada failed to medal in men's hockey was in 2006, but they'll have a chance to capture the bronze medal when they face off against the Czech Republic on Saturday morning. The Czech Republic failed to score in the semifinals against the Olympic Athletes from Russia, as they went down 3-0. Vasili Koshechkin, the Russia goalie, helped shut out the Czechs, as he stopped all 31 shots. Canada has had a tough run in the last couple of days as their men's curling and women's hockey teams lost to the United States, and now their men's hockey has gone down to Germany.
The Canadiens won the gold medals in men's hockey in 2002, 2010, and 2014, while the women's hockey team had won four straight before their thrilling loss to the U.S. Canada is currently in second place in total medals with 27 total, including 10 gold. Germany is right behind them in third place, totaling 26 medals, but have earned 13 gold. Norway is still far and away in first place with 37 medals, headlined by 13 gold and 14 silver. The United States still sits at fourth place, with 21 medals and eight gold. Germany and Canada will both attempt to add to their totals on Saturday morning, but only the Germans can add a gold.
