Derrick Henry is the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner. This caps off the 5th SEC player, including the 2nd Alabama running back (Mark Ingram) to win the coveted trophy in the last nine seasons. Alabama is in the midst of one of the best team dynasties of all time, but there domination extends to New York City on a lone Saturday, every December.
Mark Ingram started the onslaught, Trent Richardson, AJ McCarron, and Amari Cooper were all Tide players that finished in the top five, and now the historic Crimson Tide legacy can add another winner: Derrick Henry. A lot of people have overshadowed Henry’s season, many wanted and thought Christian McCaffrey should have won, and deserved to win, including yours truly. But that is to take nothing away from the season Henry went through.
His tough and rough running style can almost put you to sleep. The Crimson Tide blowing opponents out and handing the ball off to a giant of a running back 40+ times is not always the most exciting thing to watch. But he was the most productive back in the country. McCaffrey (who finished 2nd) and Deshaun Watson (3rd) were both deserving in their own right, but Henry is the one and true winner.
His 1,986 rushing yards is the most in SEC history. He eclipsed names like Herschel Walker, Darren McFadden, Kevin Faulk, and Bo Jackson on his way to the end zone, and the best thing about it is: he is not finished. At the minimum, he has one game left and quite possibly two ball games.
His yardage mark could be almost unreachable by the time the season comes to an end. He also scored 23 touchdowns on the ground, at almost six yards a pop. He was and is the best running back in the nation, and winning the Heisman trophy is much deserved by this bruising, powerful, and remarkable running back.
