SOC: Italy, Spain advance to 2020 European semifinals
Spain outlasted Switzerland in the 2020 European championship quarterfinals on Friday, July 2 after coming away with a 3-1 victory in penalty kicks. Xherdan Shaqiri scored an equalizer in the 68th minute but Switzerland wasn't able to pull off a second consecutive major upset. Gerard Moreno and Mikel Oyarzabal scored the final two penalty kicks to secure the win as Spain looks for their fourth European title. A few hours later, Italy slipped past top ranked Belgium 2-1, as Nicolò Barella and Lorenzo Insigne scored first half goals. Romelu Lukaku cut the lead in half but Belgium was never able to tie the match. Spain and Italy, who hasn't won the European championship since 1968, will meet up in the semifinals on Tuesday, July 6. England and Denmark will look to clinch the final two spots in the semifinals tomorrow afternoon.
