There were several memorable performances from the opening round of the 2025 Cranbrook Tennis Classic including Chris Eubanks coming back from a first set defeat to outlast Yasutaka Uchiyama 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in a thrilling matchup in Bloomfield Hills on Monday!
Eubanks entered the annual ATP Challenger Tour event as one of the favorites to reach the championship but Uchiyama jumped out to an early lead and nearly pulled off an upset. After suffering a 7-3 setback in a first set tiebreaker, Eubanks finally found a rhythm.
The 2023 Wimbledon quarterfinalist showcased why he's the third highest rated player in the tournament, taking down Uchiyama 7-4 in a second set tiebreaker. Eubanks eventually cruised to a 6-3 triumph in the third set and secured a spot in the second round.
Other notable matchups from the first round included Zhou Yi beating Sho Shimabukuro (6-3, 5-7, 6-4), Patrick Maloney defeating Ryuki Matsuda (6-3, 6-4) and Andres Martin upsetting Hady Habib (6-2, 6-2). The opening round is set to wrap up on Tuesday.
Maloney received All-Big Ten recognition twice during his illustrious career with the Michigan Wolverines. Now, Maloney is making a name for himself on the ATP Tour after using a strong serve and improved backhand to eliminate Matsuda in straight sets.
“It means a lot and it feels great to be playing back in Michigan. The match today was good," Maloney told the media following the win. "I thought I played well and served well. I’m just happy to get through in straight sets and I’ll be ready to go for tomorrow."
