MLB: 3 Playoff Takeaways

Staff Writer

1) Mookie Betts, not Mike Trout, is the best five-tool player in the league: Since 2018, the year Betts won his first MVP and World Series title with Boston, he’s been just slightly better than the 3-time MVP Trout. In my opinion, Betts has become the best five-tool player in the league during the last three seasons and he should continue to dominate and compete for championships for years to come. He had the highest WAR in the league this year at 3.4, with Trout coming in 62 spots lower at 1.6 wins.

By the Numbers:

BA: Betts (+0.16)

HR: Trout (+23)

OBP: Trout (+0.34)

SB: Betts (+20)

TB: Betts (+50)

RBI: Trout (+30)

WAR: Betts (+0.9)

2) Randy Arozarena had one of the top-3, if not the best, playoff runs of all-time: Arozarena broke the MLB postseason records for most home runs (10), hits (21), and total bases (64). Even though his team came up short in the end, his performance puts him in the same class as 2002 Bonds, 2004 Beltran, 2011 Freese, 2017 Altuve, and several others. Corey Seager, who won the World Series MVP for LA, also showed out with the second most homers (8) and total bases (50) in postseason history.

By the Numbers:

2002 Bonds (8 HR, 47 TB)

2004 Beltran (8 HR, 47 TB)

2004 Pujols (24 H, 46 TB)

2011 Freese (21 RBI, 50 TB)

2017 Altuve (7 HR, 45 TB)

2020 Arozarena (10 HR, 64 TB)

2020 Seager (8 HR, 50 TB)

3) The Dodgers are only looking to get better during the offseason: Just a day after winning the World Series, there are rumors circulating that the Dodgers will make a serious run at top free agents like Trevor Bauer (Reds), Liam Hendriks (Athletics), JD Martinez (Red Sox), and JT Realmuto (Phillies). The Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman will also try to re-sign Joc Pederson, Blake Treinen, and Justin Turner. Free agency begins on Sunday, Nov. 1.

By the Numbers:

Bauer (5-4, 1.73 ERA)

Hendriks (3-1, 1.78 ERA)

Martinez (.213 BA, 27 RBI)

Realmuto (11 HR, 32 RBI)
