Freedom Hall features a famous, unique history that includes the debut of one of the greatest athletes of all-time

Freedom Hall is a truly historic venue in every sense. From decades of Louisville Cardinals basketball to hosting multiple NCAA Tournament Final Fours to staging Muhammad Ali's professional boxing debut, Freedom Hall has seen it all throughout the years!

Since opening in 1956, Freedom Hall has been celebrated for its famous and unique history that includes being the former mecca of college basketball and becoming the birthplace of one of the greatest athletes of all-time as Ali debuted in his hometown.

Louisville basketball called Freedom Hall home for more than five decades, and it was considered one of the nation's most electric environments. Freedom Hall also hosted the Final Four six times, including the Kentucky Wildcats winning the 1958 national title.

Then known as Cassius Clay, Ali fought his first-ever pro fight at Freedom Hall in his hometown in 1960. Soon after taking home a gold medal at the Olympics, the Louisville native unanimously won his debut fight and eventually went on to have a legendary career.

Nearly seven decades after it was officially opened, Freedom Hall remains a revered and storied arena. Filled with rich tradition, Freedom Hall will always be the inaugural home of the Cardinals basketball and will continue to be a staple of the city of Louisville!

"The two greatest places in college basketball are Allen Fieldhouse and Freedom Hall. It’s Wrigley field. It’s Fenway Park. It’s the most charming, cozy place in basketball," former Louisville head coach Rick Pitino detailed the historical meaning of Freedom Hall.
