2026 NCAA Final Four is filled with intriguing storylines as powerhouse programs chase history on college basketball's biggest stage

Updated: Apr 2

NCAA Tournament, Final Four

The 2026 NCAA Tournament Final Four is filled with intriguing storylines as the No. 1 Arizona Wildcats and No. 1 Michigan Wolverines chase a national title for the first time this century, the No. 2 UConn Huskies look to become the second school ever to win three titles in four years, and the No. 3 Illinois Fighting Illini search for the program's first championship.

From powerhouse programs chasing history and a trio of transfers facing their former school to potential rematches from the regular season and the nation’s best front courts facing off, the Final Four has it all. The Final Four tips off as Illinois takes on UConn, followed by Arizona squaring off with Michigan at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday.

No. 1 Arizona (36-2) vs. No. 1 Michigan (35-3)

For most of the season, Arizona and Michigan have been considered the best teams in the nation and now we'll see them square off with a berth in the national title game on the line. Due to their dominant defenses, prolific offenses and physically-imposing front courts, the Final Four clash will be must-see as both schools seek their second national championship ever.

The Wolverines are 1.5-point favorites according to FanDuel, and the battle between Michigan forward Yaxel Lendeborg and Arizona forward Koa Peat will go a long way in deciding who comes out with a win. Lendeborg averaged 25.0 points and 8.3 rebounds in the last three games, while Peat posted 20.5 points and 5.0 rebounds over the past two matchups.

No. 2 UConn (33-5) vs. No. 3 Illinois (28-8)

Despite flying under the radar this season, Illinois and UConn also have what it takes to cut down the nets. Illinois owns the nation's most-efficient offense and UConn possess the Big East's top defense, but both teams play at a slow pace for the most part so it should be a competitive game that eventually comes down to who executes better in the final minutes.

The Fighting Illini are 2.5-point favorites according to FanDuel as they search for their first national title in school history, while the Huskies try to become the second program in NCAA Tournament history to win three championships in four years. Illinois is powered by guard Keaton Wagler, and UConn will need center Tarris Reed Jr. to continue to play at a high level.
